Specialty of the Month: Emergency Oxygen Provider

Emergency Oxygen Provider

In partnership with Oyster Diving – The UK’s Premier PADI Centre & Travel Specialist

In this new ongoing series, each month we shine a spotlight on a different specialty diving course, exploring how it can expand the way you dive and the experiences open to you underwater. Whether you’re looking to build confidence, unlock new environments, or simply get more enjoyment from every dive, specialty courses are designed to take your diving further than a single certification ever could.

As divers gain confidence, many want to explore new skills, dive sites, and equipment safely, with proper guidance. These focused courses help you build experience under the guidance of a professional diving instructor in a structured way, giving you the knowledge and hands-on practice to dive deeper, stay longer, handle different conditions, or simply enjoy new underwater activities with confidence. They open the door to more varied, rewarding dives and make every trip feel that bit more exciting and achievable.

JANUARY – PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider

Be the Diver Who Makes a Difference

When an incident happens during a dive, the first few minutes matter most. Being able to recognise a problem and act decisively can transform a difficult situation into a well-managed emergency.
An Emergency Oxygen Provider course is designed to give divers, and even non-divers, the knowledge and confidence to take those critical first steps. It’s one of the most universally valuable specialties available, and it requires no previous diving certification. Anyone who spends time around divers, boats, shore sites, or club activities can benefit.

What the Course Teaches You

The Emergency Oxygen Provider course focuses on practical skills that prepare you to act quickly, calmly and correctly:

Recognising Diving-Related Injuries

You’ll learn how to spot signs and symptoms of common diving emergencies such as decompression illness (DCI), lung over-expansion injuries, shock, and breathing difficulties. Understanding what to look for, and why it happens, helps you respond faster and more effectively.

Oxygen Delivery Systems

There are several ways to administer emergency oxygen depending on the casualty’s condition. The course walks you through:

  • Non-rebreather masks for breathing but distressed divers
  • Demand valves for conscious divers who can breathe independently
  • Pocket masks for rescue breaths if needed
  • Continuous-flow systems for stable but injured divers

You’ll practise assembling equipment, attaching regulators, switching delivery methods and troubleshooting common issues.

Safe Handling and Storage

Oxygen equipment requires careful, clean handling. You’ll learn how to store, transport and maintain oxygen cylinders so they’re always ready to use and safe to operate.

When NOT to Use Oxygen

While oxygen is one of the most powerful treatments available in diving emergencies, it isn’t suitable for every situation. Knowing the exceptions is just as important as knowing when to administer it.

Why This Specialty Is Important

  1. It Makes Every Dive Safer

Emergencies are rare, but when they happen, oxygen is often the most immediate and effective first aid intervention. Being trained to use it correctly makes you a valuable asset on any dive team.

  1. It Builds Calm, Capable Leaders

Divers who understand how to manage an emergency tend to dive more confidently. The course reduces stress, improves situational awareness and develops strong decision-making skills.

  1. It Benefits Your Entire Dive Community

Whether you’re a club member, a trip organiser, a regular buddy or a professional, you’re contributing to a safer dive culture. Others will feel more at ease knowing someone trained is nearby.

  1. It’s Relevant Beyond Diving

The skills also apply to general first aid and emergencies that can occur during travel, expeditions, boat trips or remote adventures.

What the Course Involves

The training is hands-on, engaging and accessible for everyone—no water sessions are required. Typically completed in a few hours, it includes:

  • A clear, easy-to-follow knowledge development session
  • Demonstrations by your instructor on different types of O₂ equipment
  • Practical scenarios where you’ll practise assessment, assembly, delivery and storage procedures
  • Realistic emergency simulations to build your confidence

By the end, you’ll not only know what to do, but why each step matters.

Why You Should Consider Taking It

If you want to become a safer, more capable diver—or simply want to take responsibility for your dive group—this course is one of the most valuable investments you can make. It’s also a natural progression for divers heading toward Rescue Diver, Divemaster, or Instructor certifications.

Whether you dive warm water occasionally or explore UK sites year-round, the ability to act in an emergency is empowering, respected, and potentially lifesaving.

Equipment That Complements the Course

While no specialised equipment is required, many divers choose to carry or invest in:

  • Pocket masks for personal emergency kits
  • Compact first aid kits for dive travel
  • DAN oxygen masks and spares
  • Oxygen-compatible bags and cases
  • Boat or club-size O₂ systems for group activities

Being familiar with your own equipment helps you respond even faster.
