GA. KOODDOO — What was meant to be a dream honeymoon has turned into a harrowing tragedy for a Spanish couple after a brutal shark attack near Gaafu Alif Kooddoo left a young groom fighting for his life.

The incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon, has sent shockwaves through the local tourism community. According to police and medical sources, the victim was part of a group that entered the water at a popular site near the Kooddoo fish processing plant—a location known for high shark activity.

Critical Medical Condition

Upon arrival at the GA. Atoll Hospital, the victim was in a critical, life-threatening state. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was emergency-airlifted to Malé, where he is currently undergoing intensive care at ADK Hospital.

Medical sources indicate the trauma was catastrophic:

  • Amputation: One limb was found to be beyond salvage. Due to major blood vessels being damaged beyond repair and prolonged limb ischemia (lack of blood flow), surgeons were forced to perform an amputation.
  • Massive Transfusion: The victim suffered extreme blood loss, requiring the hospital to activate a massive transfusion protocol to stabilize his vitals.
  • Life Support: The patient remains on life support, as he is currently neurologically unstable following the trauma and blood loss.

The “Kooddoo Entry” Theory

Local experts and divers are speculating on the cause of the sudden aggression. It is reported that the Kooddoo facility had not dumped fish waste for approximately a week. This group was reportedly the first to jump into the water after that hiatus.

”The sharks were likely in a heightened state of hunger and anticipation,” one local source noted. “When the group jumped in, the entry itself may have triggered a predatory response.”

Identity of the Sharks

While the area is famous for large schools of Spinner sharks, the nature of the injuries has raised questions about the species involved. While some believe a pack of Spinners may have been responsible, medical descriptions of the deep tissue damage and force suggest the involvement of a Bull shark, or potentially a frenzied attack by multiple Spinners.

This incident marks one of the most severe shark encounters in Maldivian history, prompting urgent discussions regarding safety protocols at sites where sharks are known to congregate near industrial runoff.
