Mermaid Minute #5: The Trumpet Fish (Watch Video)

In this new series on Scubaverse.com we are sharing Linden Wolbert’s video series ‘Mermaid Minute’.

The “Mermaid Minute” is an ocean educational web series for children.  Each action-packed episode explores one subject, creature or habitat about our oceans for 60 seconds.

Professional Mermaid Linden Wolbert is a real mermaid whose passion is educating children about the wonders of our oceans, swimming safety and ocean conservation as well as exploration and inspiring our world’s youngest ocean ambassadors.

This is Episode #5 of the Mermaid Minute, the only ocean education web series hosted by a mermaid!

Trumpet fish are long, slender fish that look like….well…a trumpet! They are harmless to humans and are fun to spot on coral reefs and grassy sea beds! Moving slowly through the water, these fish will act like a moving stick and sneak up on their prey. And then they’ll use a vacuum-like method to suck smaller fish quickly into their mouths! As a way to disguise themselves in the coral or underwater plants, trumpet fish will swim vertically, or up and down, so they can blend in. They can also change colors to match the background of where they’re swimming! Trumpet fish are actually relatives to the seahorse! Look at how similar their faces are in these pictures! And like seahorses, the male trumpet fish, not the female, is the one to carry the eggs of its young until they are born. That trumpet fish….such a gentleman!
