Garmin Descent G2 Dive Computer Combines Advanced Diving Features with Everyday Smartwatch Performance
The Descent G2 from Garmin is a rugged watch-style dive computer designed to support divers both underwater and on land. Combining advanced dive capabilities with smartwatch functionality, the Descent G2 features a bright AMOLED display, multiple dive modes and a wide range of health, fitness and connectivity tools.
Built for versatility, the Descent G2 supports a variety of diving disciplines, including recreational and technical diving as well as freediving. It also integrates Garmin’s popular health and fitness features, allowing users to track wellness metrics, training performance and daily activity when they are not in the water.
The watch features a 1.2-inch AMOLED display, designed to provide clear visibility and easy data reading even underwater. Its robust construction includes a sapphire lens, a 100-metre dive-rated case and leakproof buttons. In keeping with growing environmental awareness in the dive industry, the housing, bezel and buttons are manufactured using 100% recycled ocean-bound plastics.
The Descent G2 is available in black and paloma/shell pink colour options and is compatible with Garmin’s QuickFit bands, allowing users to easily swap straps to match their gear or personal style.
Tools to Help Divers Prepare
One of the watch’s key features is Dive Readiness, which evaluates factors such as sleep quality, stress levels, recent exercise and jet lag to provide insight into how prepared a diver’s body may be for a dive. A higher readiness score suggests conditions may be optimal, while a lower score can indicate the need for a more conservative dive plan.
Recreational and Technical Diving Support
The Descent G2 includes several core diving tools designed to support a wide range of diving styles:
-
Multiple dive modes supporting single-gas and multi-gas diving, including nitrox and trimix, along with closed-circuit rebreather (CCR) and gauge modes.
-
Built-in 3-axis compass for underwater navigation.
-
Big Numbers mode, displaying essential data such as depth, time and no-decompression limit (NDL) in a simplified, easy-to-read format.
Freediving Features
Freedivers also benefit from specialised functions designed to support training and performance:
-
Dynamic apnea mode for pool training sessions.
-
Customisable apnea alerts that provide audible and vibration notifications for depth, interval, direction and buoyancy targets.
-
Variometer alerts that notify divers of ascent or descent rate changes.
-
Velocity tracking, with dive data and descent and ascent rates reviewable in the Garmin Dive smartphone app.
Logging and Mapping After the Dive
Once the dive is complete, the Descent G2 allows users to review their dive logs, track equipment usage, add notes and share dive details through the Garmin Dive app. Surface GPS tracking can also record entry and exit points, enabling divers to view their dive locations on a map.
Smartwatch Features for Everyday Life
Beyond diving, the Descent G2 incorporates many of Garmin’s everyday smartwatch capabilities. These include 24/7 heart-rate monitoring, advanced sleep tracking, stress monitoring, respiration tracking and Pulse Ox monitoring.
Divers and athletes can also access training tools such as VO2 max tracking, recovery insights and preloaded sports apps for activities including cycling, open-water swimming and strength training. Garmin Coach adaptive training plans and suggested workouts further support performance goals.
When paired with a compatible smartphone, the watch can display notifications, track health metrics through the Garmin Connect platform, and provide safety features such as incident detection and LiveTrack. Additional conveniences include Garmin Pay contactless payments and downloadable watch faces and apps from the Connect IQ store.
The Garmin Descent G2 has a suggested retail price of £589.99.
