Fiji Resort Embarks on Coral Planting Program
Mana Island Resort and Spa in the Mamanuca Group has successfully embarked on a reef rehabilitation program that has proven to be a hit among guests.
The island resort which began its coral replanting program with the Mamanuca Environment Society has been able to rope in guests for the rehabilitation project.
MES project officer Marica Volavola said this year the resort aimed to plant 50 corals per week.
She said this meant the resort would have planted 2400 corals by March, 2018.
“A recent environment day at the resort was attended by Mana Environment team, staff and representatives from the Ministry of Local Government, MES to acknowledge the support towards the environment conservation,” she said.
“Mana Island Resort and Spa is taking a step forward in restoring and protecting natural ecosystems through their own marine and terrestrial conservation projects and directly supporting MES work in the region.
“Coral planting is the main activity of the day with 36 coral cookies planted with the assistance of 13 resort staff and two children who were guests at the resort. The main objective is to restore the in-house reef at Mana Island Resort and promote sustainable tourism in the region.”
At the resort, coral tables are set up and monitored by staff on a weekly basis for six months, then transferred to an area in the reef that needs restoration.
