Combine the Great Barrier Reef and Fiji in One Seamless Dive Club Trip with Diveplanit

Dive Club Trip

Diveplanit recently hosted a targeted familiarisation program for North American dive club managers, demonstrating how easily the Great Barrier Reef and Fiji can now be combined into a single, high-value group itinerary. Both destinations have long been “must dive” locations, but logistical challenges have often made pairing them difficult — a barrier this program was designed to overcome.

Connecting Iconic Destinations

Fiji is already a favourite among North American divers, while Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef have traditionally required complex routing and extra domestic flights. With Fiji Airways’ direct Nadi–Cairns service, running three times per week and connecting from Los Angeles, Dallas–Fort Worth, and Vancouver, travel between these destinations is now seamless. Diveplanit’s goal was to show managers how both locations can fit into a single itinerary without wasting travel days.

Cairns: More Than a Liveaboard Gateway

The 12-night program began in Cairns, with participants staying at the Pullman Reef Casino before boarding a three-night liveaboard expedition to the Ribbon Reefs, diving some of the Great Barrier Reef’s most remote and pristine sites.

Topside experiences included a full-day Daintree Rainforest tour with FNQ Nature Tours and a Mandingalbay Authentic Indigenous Cultural Tour, showing how Cairns supports multi-day itineraries for divers and non-divers alike.

Fiji: Familiar Yet Distinct

From Cairns, the program continued to Fiji, highlighting two contrasting dive regions. Participants stayed at Waidroka Bay Resort, renowned for its shark dive, and Volivoli Beach Resort, famous for colourful reefs and clear visibility. The combination of the Great Barrier Reef’s scale and Fiji’s soft coral diversity underlined why these destinations work so well together in a single trip.

Proven Demand

Each dive club manager represented clubs with hundreds of members. All participants committed to returning with groups of 10–20 divers within 24 months, with one group of 24 already confirmed.

Deborah Dickson-Smith, Diveplanit Business Development Manager, said: “Confirmed trips provide guaranteed ROI, but the longer-term impact comes from word-of-mouth and social media exposure generated by influential managers who’ve experienced both destinations firsthand.”

Connectivity is Key

Ease of travel was a highlight. Kamal Haer, Chief Marketing & Sales Officer at Fiji Airways, commented: “The direct Nadi–Cairns route transforms access for North American travellers, connecting them to iconic marine environments and enhancing tourism exchange between our regions.”

For dive clubs, this means fewer flights, less fatigue, and more time diving.
