Book Review: Beneath Irish Seas by Nigel Motyer
Review by Shannon Moran
First of all – wow. This book is a collection of some of the most breathtaking cold-water images I have ever seen. With more than one hundred pages of top-notch photography, every single page leaves you in awe, wondering what else Nigel could possibly uncover in Ireland’s waters. It is a true visual feast, capturing the extraordinary variety and beauty of marine life along the rugged Irish coastline.
What makes Beneath Irish Seas so compelling is not just the images themselves but the way they are presented. Nigel has created a something that works as both a piece of natural history reading and a stunning coffee-table book. Each photograph is accompanied by carefully crafted captions that provide just the right balance of information. The notes are clear and insightful, offering context that connects the reader to both the subject and its wider ecology. It’s well thought out and informative, without being too technical. Nigel speaks from decades of diving and photographic experience, and it shows. He knows how to engage readers who might have little knowledge of marine biology while still offering plenty of detail to satisfy those who do.
The decision to focus exclusively on Irish waters is refreshing. So often underwater photography books celebrate tropical reefs and warmer seas. Here, however, Nigel demonstrates that some of the most vibrant and surprising biodiversity exists much closer to home. His love of Ireland’s waters is obvious in every page. The habitats he explores are incredibly varied – Maerl beds, kelp forests, wrecks, rocky reefs – each presented with its own mood and character. Rare species sightings add a sense of excitement and discovery, reminding us that these waters still hold many secrets waiting to be revealed.
The scope of the imagery is remarkable. From huge aggregations of basking sharks at thirty metres, to the playfulness of bottlenose dolphins close to shore, to the delicate intricacies of seagrass meadows and jewel anemones no larger than a fingernail, Nigel captures it all with clarity and artistry. The diversity on display is staggering, a reminder that Irish seas are every bit as dramatic and colourful as those found in tropical waters.
Reading the book left me inspired. I found myself asking why I had not already booked a trip to Ireland to experience these waters for myself. The photographs ignite a sense of wanderlust, while the accompanying words instil respect for the fragile ecosystems they portray. Nigel’s work highlights not only the beauty of our seas but also their vulnerability. Climate change, pollution, and overfishing all pose real threats, and Beneath Irish Seas quietly but powerfully calls on us to value and protect these habitats for generations to come.
This is far more than a photography book. It is a love letter to Ireland’s underwater world, a testament to the rewards of patience, skill, and passion, and a gentle but persuasive call to action. For divers, photographers, nature lovers, or anyone who simply enjoys being transported to another world through the turn of a page, Beneath Irish Seas is an absolute must-read.
