Mermaid Minute #9: Ocean Currents (Watch Video)

In this new series on Scubaverse.com we are sharing Linden Wolbert’s video series ‘Mermaid Minute’.

The “Mermaid Minute” is an ocean educational web series for children.  Each action-packed episode explores one subject, creature or habitat about our oceans for 60 seconds.

Professional Mermaid Linden Wolbert is a real mermaid whose passion is educating children about the wonders of our oceans, swimming safety and ocean conservation as well as exploration and inspiring our world’s youngest ocean ambassadors.

This is Episode #9 of the Mermaid Minute, the only ocean education web series hosted by a mermaid!

So what is an OCEAN CURRENT, anyway? Well, it’s a continuous movement of water through our oceans, like a giant river that carries sea nutrients, creatures and all sorts of man-made objects around our planet — including BOATS! Ocean currents are influenced by the SPINNING FORCE of our EARTH, and the magnetic pull of our MOON! Currents play a huge role in our WEATHER PATTERNS and TEMPERATURES around the globe. Currents form our OCEANIC GYRES. A gyre is a rotating clockwise or counter-clockwise pattern on the surface of the open ocean. The GULF STREAM CURRENT carries so much warm water across the ATLANTIC, that PALM TREES have grown on the west coast of IRELAND! SCUBA DIVERS get to do something called DRIFT DIVING with the currents. The current carries them all the way past a coral reef and all of the animals in it! It’s PRETTY FUN!!!

And that’s an OCEAN CURRENT in a MERMAID MINUTE! I’m Mermaid Linden! Sea you next time, my little sea fans!
