Scubaverse UWP Winners Gallery: Cédric Peneau

Each month we give the winner of the Scubaverse Underwater Photography competition the opportunity to show off a little more of their work in a gallery. The May winner was Cédric Peneau and you can see his winning image at the top of this page.

What do you love about diving & underwater photography?

When I was a little child I was fascinated by Cousteau’s Team’s adventures on television. They  were like astronauts to me, exploring unknown worlds, using elaborated equipment to breathe and move underwater. At that time I dreamt of becoming one day  a “frog man” myself !

When I had the chance to try scuba diving  in Thailand in 2004 I didn’t miss it and got immediately fascinated by it, so I continued to explore the colourful, lively underwater world. Later I got interested in bringing back memories from down below, and soon got caught up in the game of trying to make as good photographs as possible…

What equipment do you use?

I use a Nikon D7200 in a Nauticam Housing and various lenses, depending on the subject: A fisheye lens for wide angle reefscapes or “big stuff” shots, which allows me to get close to the subject and to grab a fair amount of light and detail, or a 85 mm lens (with extra diopters if needed) for macro, “critters” shots. I am rather eclectic in taste, I like taking all kinds of photographs, from macro shots of critters in shallow rock pools to stunning reefscapes wide angle shots, including, of course, cetaceans in the deep blue !!
