No Deal at INC-5.2: The Ocean Cleanup Warns of Lost Momentum in Plastic Pollution Fight
The Ocean Cleanup Responds to Stalled INC-5.2 Talks
The Ocean Cleanup is deeply concerned by the failure to reach agreement at INC-5.2 and to recognize the urgency of the global fight against plastic pollution. With the future of the treaty uncertain, we risk losing momentum for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – and we risk losing the fight.
These results come following a series of late-night negotiations that extended through Thursday evening’s deadline and ended in the early hours of Friday.
With major divisions remaining, there was no consensus, and therefore no treaty. Parties are now expected to reconvene at a later date to continue negotiations.
Plastic pollution continues to devastate marine ecosystems, and every delay means more plastic entering our rivers and oceans. While we understand the complexity of global consensus, the stakes are also high – for our health, our ocean, and our future.
We urge negotiators to return to the table with renewed resolve and a shared commitment to ambitious solutions. The Ocean Cleanup will continue its mission to clean up existing pollution in our ocean and rivers around the world, but to truly end plastic pollution, we need global cooperation and a global treaty.
