The Last Frontier… (Watch Video)

In April 2017, an international team of scientists embarked on board the R/V Marion Dufresne, a French oceanographic vessel operated by the French Polar Institute IPEV, to study unknown ecosystems of a remote seamount in the South West Indian Ocean. The Walters Shoal, an underwater mountain located beyond national jurisdictions, is explored by the scientists of the French Natural History Museum and IRD (French Research Institute for Development) during the 26-day expedition.

‘The Last Frontier’ is a documentary produced by IUCN in partnership with and thanks to the financial support of the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) which follows The Walters Shoal Expedition and reports on what is at stake. It calls for increased science for high seas and a better governance for international waters. Written by James Nikitine, it is directed by James Nikitine and Fabiano D’Amato, with a narration by Alain Ghazal and music by Woodkid. The high seas are #TheLastFrontier to our knowledge.
