Harry Stone: From Jaws to Banning Straws – How Shark Photography Changed My Life – July NUPG Meeting (Watch Video)

The July 2021 NUPG meeting saw Harry Stone take to the virtual stage. Harry Stone is a marine and wildlife photographer, conservationist, shark fanatic, technical diver and instructor. Harry talked to us about how he got into shark photography, starting topside and progressing to underwater images. He is probably most famous for his images of Great White Sharks from South Africa but he has a huge library of amazing shark images and he shared these with us over the course of the talk.

Harry also discussed the importance of the underwater photographer in shark conservation and how responsibility of both how sharks are treated on shark dives and how the images are used in the media lie with the photographer. His excellent talk is available to watch in full here.

As always, the NUPG members also had a chance to show off some of their images in the monthly competition. This month’s theme was “Creative Lighting” and Caroline Robertson-Brown took the top spot with an image of a backlit leaffish from the Lembeh Straight.

Runner-up spot was awarded to Nick Robertson-Brown for his image of Christ of the Abyss taken in Portofino in Italy.

3rd place was awarded to John Spencer for his snooted hermit crab shot from the Scottish Lochs.
