Florida man receives prison sentence for turtle egg poaching

A South Florida man has received a two-year prison sentence for poaching over 300 sea turtle eggs.

Earlier this year, Kenneth Cornelius Coleman of Riviera Beach pleaded guilty to one count of unlawfully transporting endangered sea turtle eggs. He was facing up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he was sentenced earlier this month.

U.S. District Judge William Zloch ordered for the two-year sentence to run consecutively to a year-long prison sentence Coleman was given for violating his supervised release after a 2010 guilty plea for poaching.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Coleman took 316 sea turtle eggs from nests in Juno Beach over a two-day period last July.

Authorities matched DNA from Coleman to a canvas bag which was found containing more than 200 eggs.
