Oceanic sharks are in serious trouble and need better protection. Overfishing and weak enforcement of management are pushing these majestic species toward extinction, threatening the health of our oceans and the communities that rely on them. 3/4 of Oceanic Sharks and Rays are threatened with extinction. Overfishing and weak protections contributing to a 71% decrease in oceanic shark and ray populations in the last 50 years. Help the Shark Trust advocate for science-based protections, strengthen enforcement, to give these species the chance they need.

This is a moment when every contribution matters. Here are just some of the species that the Shark Trust are advocating for:
Silky Sharks: unprotected, yet exploited in the Indian Ocean, Silky Sharks urgently need science-based management
Oceanic Whitetip & Thresher Sharks: prohibited, yet still caught as bycatch, adoption of a ban on wire-leaders could significantly reduce mortality.
Shortfin & Longfin Makos: overfished & undergoing overfishing – close scrutiny is required to ensure reporting presents a true impression of the impact on these species.
Blue Sharks: a target fishery, yet currently caught with no limits, the 2025 Blue Shark stock assessment warned against any increase in catch, and highlighted the need for close monitoring – 2026 provides opportunity for adoption of a science-based catch-limit.
Please consider supporting the Shark Trust Indian Ocean Sharks Appeal during this critical time, where every £1 will be DOUBLED.
