Underwater Filmmaker Jacob Guy embarks on Citizen Science Diving Expedition to Antarctica

Jacob Guy

Underwater filmmaker, photographer and Scubaverse Underwater Photography Team member Jacob Guy has embarked on a rare Antarctic diving expedition this January, joining Blue Green Expeditions for a citizen science-focused voyage to the Weddell Sea, one of the most remote and least-explored marine environments on Earth.

Departing yesterday (5 January) and returning on 25 January, Guy will spend 9–22 January aboard the expedition vessel, taking part in a series of scientific research projects while documenting the underwater world of Antarctica through still imagery and film. The expedition will combine recreational diving, snorkelling, and zodiac-based operations in water temperatures reaching –2°C, with dives planned to depths of up to 20 metres around icebergs and along the Antarctic seafloor.

The primary aim of the expedition is citizen science, with projects ranging from plankton sampling and biodiversity surveys to monitoring sea star wasting syndrome and the potential discovery of new species. Alongside the research, Jacob will be capturing underwater imagery focused on conservation, education, and the visual storytelling of life beneath the Antarctic ice.

“Antarctica is a place I’ve always wanted to visit, but one I honestly thought was beyond my reach,” says Jacob. “To be able to dive there for the first time, while contributing to real scientific research and conservation, is an incredible opportunity.”

Diving in Antarctic conditions presents unique challenges. With extreme cold as the primary factor, Jacob will be using a specialised cold-water configuration including dry gloves, extensive thermal protection, and a redundant regulator setup with two first stages and two second stages on a single tank, ensuring safety and reliability in freezing conditions.

The expedition will result in a series of images and a short film, with selection intended for publication through Scubaverse, helping bring awareness to Antarctica’s fragile marine ecosystems and the importance of ongoing scientific research in polar regions.

Jacob Guy is an underwater filmmaker and photographer specialising in conservation, wildlife, and expedition storytelling. He is a Fourth Element Pioneer and works across both film and stills to highlight the beauty and vulnerability of the ocean.
