Divers Remove 320kg of Waste from Popular Malta Dive Sites

Divers have removed an impressive 320kg of waste from the seabed during a major underwater clean-up operation at three popular locations in Malta.

The Coast is Clear Dive Team carried out a three-dive expedition covering Blue Lagoon, San Niklaw Bay and Paradise Bay, recovering a wide range of rubbish from the underwater environment.

Among the items brought to the surface were 11 diving and snorkelling masks, highlighting how equipment and other waste can end up on the seabed at some of Malta’s most visited coastal sites.

The clean-up was organised by Coast is Clear with support from Watercolours Dive Centre and The Alfred Mizzi Foundation.

Operations such as this play an important role in tackling marine litter, removing waste before it can continue to affect the underwater environment and the marine life that depends on it.

For the divers involved, the three-dive expedition was not only an opportunity to remove a substantial amount of rubbish, but also a reminder of the important role the diving community can play in protecting the places where we dive.
