Divers in Dominica check reefs for damage following tropical storm
On Thursday 10th September, divers from Buddy Dive Dominica joined a group of Dutch Marines on their first reconnaissance dive mission following Tropical Storm Erika to see if the storm did any damage to Dominica’s beautiful reefs.
The first dives were on the Atlantic side of the island; the team reported that visibility is not great there yet, but no damage was discovered at the dive sites.
The team then moved on to the Marine Park on the south side of the island and reported that once again, no damage was found.
The team’s final stop – Champagne Reef – is currently only accessible by boat as the boardwalk is damaged, but apparently diving at the reef was as great as before.
Gus – Buddy Dive master and Captain – said: “I’ve been diving here now for over 20 years and it’s great to see that even a storm like this can’t destroy these beautiful reefs. The visibility wasn’t great due to the rivers, but it’s almost back to normal now. We are ready for the season and everybody is welcome to Dominica.”
