Buddy Dive Launches New Bonaire Shore Diver Specialty Course
Buddy Dive Resort Bonaire has launched a new specialty course designed to help certified divers develop the skills and local knowledge needed to enjoy Bonaire’s renowned shore diving safely and independently.
The Bonaire Shore Diver Specialty Course, launched on 7 August 2026, has been developed by Buddy Dive Resort specifically around the conditions, regulations and diving practices associated with shore diving on Bonaire.
Bonaire is recognised as one of the world’s leading shore diving destinations, with easy access to reefs, clearly marked dive sites and the freedom for divers to explore independently. However, this style of diving also requires an understanding of local conditions, navigation, marine park regulations and the practicalities of managing shore dives.
The new full-day course combines classroom-based theory with two practical training dives at different shore dive sites.
During the theory session, participants learn about Bonaire National Marine Park regulations, independent dive planning, navigation using natural references and a compass, shore entry and exit techniques, emergency procedures, equipment setup and considerations for night diving.
The two guided dives then give participants the opportunity to put these skills into practice in real diving conditions under the supervision of a Buddy Dive instructor.
On completion of the course, divers will be equipped to plan and conduct shore dives independently. They will also learn how to use Bonaire’s distinctive yellow stones and dive-site markers to identify entry and exit points, navigate underwater and manage vehicles, tanks and equipment for multi-dive days.
Responsible diving is also a key element of the course, with an emphasis on practices that help protect Bonaire’s marine environment.
Open to divers of all experience levels
The Bonaire Shore Diver Specialty Course is available to certified divers of all experience levels. It is intended to provide first-time visitors with an introduction to Bonaire’s shore diving, while also giving more experienced divers additional local knowledge.
Participants must be at least 10 years old and hold a Junior Open Water Diver certification or higher.
The course costs US$200 and includes a full day of instruction and two guided training dives.
Participants also receive a 25% discount on the Bonaire Reef Smart Guide, which is available through the Buddy Dive retail shop. The guide includes detailed dive-site maps, suggested routes, local stories and practical information to help divers continue exploring the island.
