UNESCO launches call for marine conservation board and card games

UNESCO

The UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok and the UN Office for UN Coordination for Asia and the Pacific have issued a call for proposals for the production of educational board and card games centred on marine conservation and ocean education. The announcement was published today, 18 February 2026, and invites eligible organisations to submit proposals by 4 March 2026.

The initiative is part of UNESCO’s “Sustaining Our Oceans” (SOO) project, which aims to engage young learners and community groups in understanding marine ecosystems and conservation challenges through interactive learning tools. Under the current call, prospective partners are asked to customise and prepare physical versions of existing educational game titles for broader use in classrooms, science centres and community learning centres in Thailand.

Games to be produced include titles covering themes such as tsunamis, the Andaman Sea, UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in Thailand, ocean conservation, and other marine topics, as outlined in the proposal details. The board games will be printed in both English and Thai, and are intended for distribution to schools and community groups to support learning about marine environments.

In addition to the board games, the contract includes production of a Sustaining Our Oceans card game with multiple language editions, as well as requirements for print‑ready “print and play” versions of all titles. Selected vendors will also support a one‑day demonstration workshop in Bangkok to introduce educators and centre staff to the materials.

The call highlights UNESCO’s continued emphasis on ocean literacy as part of broader education efforts — complementing ongoing regional programmes that use interactive tools and experiences to build awareness of marine systems and conservation among young people.
