UK Beach Litter At Its Highest Level For 20 Years
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS)’s Great British Beach Clean results from 2014 have been released.
In 2013, reco
rded beach litter levels across the UK reached their highest point for 20 years.
Sadly, this worrying trend continued in 2014. Across the UK, more than 2,457 pieces of litter were recorded for every kilometre cleaned, representing an increase of 6% on 2013. Overall, despite existing measures aimed at reducing beach litter, the 2014 results represent an increase of 135% since MCS began conducting surveys in 1994.
The report also highlights the growing problem of wet wipes on our beaches, and the dissapointing news about their careless disposal is that there are 50% more wipes being found on Britain’s beaches compared to the previous year.
