Divers travelling to Malta will have to pay new ‘Eco-Tax’

Malta

Divers travelling to Malta need to be aware of the newly imposed Malta government legislation regarding Eco -Tax contribution.

As from the 20th June an Eco-Tax contribution of 50 cents per person per night will apply. This fee is capped at 10 nights, so each guest will pay a maximum of 5 Euros per stay.

This tax has to be collected by all accommodation providers. Persons under the age of 18 are excluded from paying this tax, but must present their passport as proof of age.

Malta’s tourism minister Edward Zammit Lewis said in a news conference yesterday that the Eco-Tax was being introduced to generate funds for general infrastructural improvements and to improve the kind of tourism offered by the country.

A number of operators present at the press conference were reportedly disappointed at not being consulted prior to the decision.
