Spanish Salvage Diver Killed After Getting ‘Entangled’ In Costa Concordia Wreck
A diver working on the wreck of the Costa Concordia has died after becoming ‘entangled’ underwater, officials revealed last week.
The victim, named locally as 40-year-old Spaniard Israel Franco Moreno, is said to have bled to death after his leg got caught in a metal sheet.
Luxury cruise liner the Costa Concordia capsized more than two years ago after striking rocks off an Italian island.
Captain Francesco Schettino altered course to carry out a sailby salute to impress passengers and locals.
The tragedy cost 32 lives and one body has yet to be recovered. Captain Schettino is currently on trial accused of multiple manslaughter and causing a disaster.
A spokesman for salvage firm Titan Micoperi said:”Sadly a Spanish diver has died following an accident during underwater operations on the site.
“The exact dynamic is being investigated. The men and women of the consortium (Titan Micoperi) express their closeness to the family of their deceased colleague.”
