Shortfin Mako Sharks need your help!

Since 2014 The Shark Trust has been working to stop overfishing of No Limits? sharks: Blue Sharks, Shortfin Mako, Tope, smoothhounds and catsharks.  It’s a long-haul campaign and they cannot and will not rest until all these species have adequate catch limits put in place. We must ensure these sharks are managed responsibly. Before it’s too late.

Shark Trust followers have shown huge support for ending uncontrolled shark fishing. Together they’ve secured a phenomenal 174,000 petition signatures! And this created waves. The support aided the adoption of a binding Recommendation at ICCAT 2017. Now, live makos caught in the North Atlantic are required to be released. A great step forward. But it’s not enough.

Shortfin Makos are in serious trouble. Even if landings are cut to zero, they only have a 54% chance of recovery by 2040. A complete ban on retaining Shortfin Mako needs to be implemented. This is the goal for 2018 but The Shark Trust needs your help…

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Let’s show Atlantic shark fishing nations we’re watching their actions!

The next annual ICCAT meeting is in November 2018. Ahead of this they invite you to show your support by joining #Move4Makos!

Join The Shark Trust in moving 1 mile in support of the Shortfin Mako. You can run, cycle, swim, climb, beach clean, eggcase hunt or take the dog for a walk. Whatever gets you moving! Take a photo of yourself, or something that represents your activity. Then upload this, along with details of your #Move4Makos, to the campaign website.

Each person can only submit 1 mile. And The Shark Trust is aiming for at least 6000 miles. So why not get your friends and family to join in?

At the same time The Shark Trust be working with their Shark League colleagues; urging politicians and managers to stick with their commitments and ensure fishing pressure is reduced.
