Scuba challenge raises thousands for disability day
This year’s ‘Going the extra mile scuba challenge’ has been deemed a big success after raising more than £3,500 towards next year’s Disability Awareness Day.
The annual event, organised by the Warrington Disability Partnership in the UK, saw charity founder Dave Thompson complete the 64-length distance at Woolston Leisure Centre in two hours and 40 minutes, while former serviceman Tom Coleridge finished the challenge in two hours and 15 minutes on Saturday.
The 22-year-old, who was paralysed from the waist after being shot in Afghanistan in 2010, said: “I smashed it in only my fifth time in the water.
“This is the furthest diving distance I’ve ever completed and I’d really like to thank the instructors for getting me through it.
“This has been a massive personal achievement and while my arms are really tired, it’s given me the confidence to go for my open water qualification.”
