Five tourists have died following a scuba diving incident in the Maldives, with authorities confirming that an investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.

The group, all Italian nationals, were diving in the Vaavu Atoll yeterday (14 May 2026) after departing from a liveaboard. According to reports, they failed to surface after entering the water earlier that day, prompting a search and rescue operation led by the Maldives National Defence Force.

The divers are believed to have been exploring an underwater cave system at a depth of around 50 metres (approximately 160 feet).

One body was recovered during initial search efforts, with authorities indicating that the remaining divers are likely located within the same cave system. Recovery operations have been complicated by depth, confined conditions and environmental factors.

Those who died have been identified in international reports as Monica Montefalcone, a marine biology professor at the University of Genoa, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, along with Muriel Oddenino, Gianluca Benedetti, and Federico Gualtieri.

Local authorities have not confirmed a cause of death, and officials have stressed that investigations are still at an early stage.

Some external experts, cited in media coverage, have suggested that factors such as depth, gas management, or diver response to an incident could potentially be relevant. However, no official conclusions have been released, and it remains too early to determine the sequence of events.

Weather conditions in the area at the time were reported to include strong winds, though it is not known whether this contributed to the incident.

The Maldives is one of the world’s leading dive destinations, and incidents of this scale there are rare. Authorities have described the event as one of the most serious diving accidents recorded in the country, with further updates expected as the investigation progresses.
