Boat skippers warned not to drop anchor at Scapa Flow as divers find torpedo
Boats are being urged not to anchor in part of Scapa Flow after a seven-metre torpedo was found on the seabed.
The device was identified during a routine sonar survey which was being conducted by Sula Diving on Saturday for the Orkney Islands Council.
Royal Navy divers will examine video footage of the torpedo and decide how it should be handled.
Scapa Flow, off Orkney in Scotland, was used as a Royal Navy base in both world wars and is now popular with divers due to the British and German wrecks lying on the seabed.
More than 50 German ships were scuttled in the area at the end of the First World War by their commanders. The coastguard said the torpedo “presents no immediate danger”; however, the Orkney harbour master has asked vessels not to anchor in the area where it was found.
Bev Allen, duty controller for the UK Coastguard, said: “Until the Royal Navy divers have had a chance to examine the footage and the object, we are asking that vessels and divers keep at a safe distance and follow the instructions of the harbour master and the UK Coastguard.”
