Nikon Announces The AW1, The First Digital Interchangeable Lens Underwater Camera
Nikon has announced the first digital, interchangeable lens underwater camera, the AW1.
The AW1 is depth rated to 49-feet, well within the range of recreational diving. More impressive than the “toughness” is the camera within: It’s very similar to the existing Nikon 1 J3, with a 14.2-megapixel CX sensor, an EXPEED 3A processor, ISO range between 160-6400, a 73-point AF array and the ability to shoot Full HD 1080p photos.
Nikon also announced a pair of waterproof lenses to accompany the AW1: an 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 and a wide-angle 10mm f/2.8. The lenses lock in bayonet-style, with the addition of an o-ring to keep the water out.
The camera is set for shipping in October as a single lens kit for $800 or with both lenses for $1000. For more info, check out the Nikon press release.
