Anilao: Macro Destination of the World
Anilao in the Philippines has become quite popular in the past few years, not only as a diving destination but also as a photographer’s haven for macro subjects.
As a branch of underwater photography, macro photography has evolved quite a lot in recent years as camera equipment becomes more sophisticated, dive sites that are associated with the activity are promoted more and more through social media, and new critters are discovered regularly. That is why Anilao is currently considered as one of the top diving destinations in the world, where you can shoot small creatures that are almost impossible for the naked eye to see.
Local dive spotters in Anilao are given rock star status by most photographers for finding stuff they never imagined they would find on their own. These spotters use their knowledge of the subjects’ habitat, behaviour and food sources in order to find them. Another way that these people know where to find these creatures is through shared information – they pass on knowledge of what they have discovered to other spotters.
As well as a wide range of critters, Anilao also boasts various dive sites. Each dive site offers different underwater landscapes from muck to wall to sloping reef. It’s the perfect place for beginners, advanced divers and those who consider themselves as adventure divers.
