New Female Scuba Diving Guinness World Record Attempt Announced
Hot off the heels of PADI’s Women’s Dive Day, a new event that celebrates women’s achievements in scuba diving has been announced.
Kuwati national Reem Abdullah Al Edan, an SSI Divemaster who is in the process of completing her SSI Instructor qualification as she works in the Ministry of Health in Kuwait, is currently preparing to challenge and break the female Guinness World Record for the Longest Saltwater Scuba dive.
The event, which is planned for October 2015 and will take place in Hurghada in the Egyptian Red Sea, is being organised by a management team made up from members of the Rescue and Environmental Protection Society and Splash Red Sea, who were also involved in the recent successful Guinness World Record by Walaa Hafez to become the Longest Male Saltwater Scuba Diver.
It is the management team’s intention to train a support team and Reem herself in Egypt with the International support team, who will consist mainly of women.
It’s hoped by the organisers that the event will further raise the profile of women in diving. It is also important to Reem to raise the awareness of women in Arabian countries who face daily challenges. She would like to show that it is possible to succeed and overcome a negative attitude in a male dominated atmosphere.
It is also hoped that the joint Kuwati-Egyptian event will demonstrate that the two countries can support and celebrate this achievement together, and will highlight that Egypt is still a safe place to travel for divers.
Any additional offers of sponsorship from within the diving community will also be welcomed.
The organisers of the event are actively seeking applications from women in the industry who are interested in assisting in this challenge by joining the support team.
