Sand Tiger Shark tries to eat Whitetip Reef Shark at Japanese Aquarium

Workers at the Aqua World Aquarium in Oarai, Japan, were horrified when a sand tiger shark that hadn’t been eating well suddenly turned on a whitetip reef shark in their shared exhibit tank and tried to have it for breakfast.

But because of the smaller shark’s really tough skin, and after chomping several times and trying to swallow the whitetip whole, the sand tiger shark finally just gave up and spat it out.

Employees recovered the whitetip, but it was too mauled to recover and died.

“In light of this event, we will be further increasing the effort we make when judging which sharks to place in the same tanks, taking into account their relative size and possible hostilities,” a spokesperson for the aquarium said.
