Jeff Goodman reviews Great British Marine Animals by Paul Naylor
Great British Marine Animals by Paul Naylor
A review by Jeff Goodman
If you were ever under the misconception that UK seas are dull and lifeless then do have a look at this book.
This is the 3rd revised edition and is a pure delight. Definitely one to have on your bookshelf.
Printed in glossy paperback the book is filled with stunning high quality photos and well crafted script and animal descriptions. The layout is easy to follow and starts by introducing the reader to the marine world and the basic types of habitat accessible to us as either divers, snorkelers or rock poolers. The book then takes us into the different groups of marine life to be found, sponges – anemones – corals – crabs – crustaceans – fish, and so on. They are all there.
Each animal is represented by a clear sharp photo or series of photos, which as well as identification, often show aspects of behaviour. For example, the Common Cuttlefish Sepia officinalis has seven pages dedicated to it. The descriptive text is easy to read and packed with good information in the form of biological facts and personal observations.
It is available through all good bookshops and online. The recommended price is £16.
