Charity’s lobbying plea for MPs to attend debate on shark fin trade ban

Finspire Change UK Campaign

Shark Guardian has been leading the campaign, Finspire Change UK, since May 2020. The campaign successfully raised over 115,000 signatures from UK residents on a petition to ask for the closure of an import allowance that allows anyone entering the UK to bring in 20kg of shark fin.

The petition officially closed on September 11th and is eligible for debate in Parliament. The debate date has not yet been published but Shark Guardian expect it to be announced in early 2021.

The charity is now calling for UK citizens, to keep the pressure on the Members of Parliament (MP’s).

MP’s do not have to attend debates, but they do have a duty to represent the interests and concerns of their constituents. Therefore, if they understand that voters within their regions are passionate about this issue – they have a duty to attend and support. Shark Guardian are now urging all UK residents who oppose the shark fin trade to contact their MP and ask them to attend the debate.

There are three ways that people can do this:

  1. Email – visit www.sharkguardian.org/campaign-finspire-change to find your MP’s email, read hints and tips on writing your email along with important points to include.
  2. Tweet – visit www.sharkguardian.org/campaign-finspire-change and scroll down to “Tweet my MP” to find a table showing a list of MP’s, whether or not they have expressed their support of the ban, and an option to send them an automated tweet with one click.
  3. Postcard – Shark Guardian have designed and printed eye-catching postcards that will certainly get noticed at your MP’s postal address. Hand them out to your friends and family and ask them to send them to their MP’s. Visit www.sharkguardian.org/product-page/ban-shark-fin-uk-postcards to print your own or purchase the professionally printed cards.

For more information on specific MP’s, Shark Guardian will be sharing MP fact files on their social media the next few months.
