Capturing Critters in Lembeh Returns for 2027 with Photo Pros Marty Snyderman and James Emery
Lembeh Resort’s flagship underwater photography event, Capturing Critters in Lembeh (CCiL), will return for its 13th edition in January 2027, bringing together two internationally acclaimed image-makers to lead a week of immersive learning in one of the world’s most celebrated macro diving destinations.
Running from 11–18 January 2027, with optional pre- and post-workshop extensions available, the workshop offers photographers of all abilities the opportunity to refine their skills while diving Lembeh Strait’s legendary muck sites – widely regarded as a global hotspot for rare and unusual marine life.

A Powerful Teaching Partnership
The 2027 workshop will be led by Emmy Award-winning cinematographer and veteran educator Marty Snyderman, alongside underwater photographer and Backscatter imaging specialist James Emery. Together with Lembeh Resort’s own photo pro and support staff, they bring decades of experience in underwater photography, education, and fieldwork, offering participants a unique blend of artistic insight and technical expertise.
Marty focuses primarily on behavior and more traditional underwater photography techniques, allowing photographers to build on a solid foundation of core skills. James goes beyond traditional techniques and bridges the gap to the creative side, focusing on approaches like slow shutter speeds, shallow depth of field, and creative backgrounds. Having these two photographers in one workshop ensures that no matter where you are in your photography journey, you’ll find something to add to your skill portfolio.

Why Lembeh?
Often dubbed the “Critter Capital of the World,” the Lembeh Strait is famed for its extraordinary biodiversity, from flamboyant cuttlefish and pygmy seahorses to mimic octopuses, nudibranchs, and paper nautilus. Its volcanic black sand slopes provide the perfect environment for macro photography, where patience and keen observation are rewarded with rare and captivating encounters.

Another major advantage of studying at Lembeh Resort is the photo center team and dive guides. Home to the region’s only Backscatter-authorized Photo Center, Lembeh Resort offers a level of technical support, experience, and equipment that is unparalleled. During CCiL 2027, participants will not only learn from world-renowned photographers and a cohort of fellow photographers, but if anything goes wrong with their equipment, Lembeh Resort has the support in place to ensure they can continue honing their craft. Their wide range of rental equipment also allows guests to try new gear and access expert advice on the tools that can elevate their photography to a new level in future.
What Participants Can Expect
The CCiL 2027 experience combines daily seminars, in-water demonstrations, and personalized coaching with up to 17 guided dives, unlimited access to the Lembeh Resort house reef, and one-on-one mentoring sessions tailored to each participant’s goals and equipment.

With limited spaces available, the 13th edition of Capturing Critters in Lembeh promises an inspiring blend of world-class instruction, extraordinary marine life, and the unmatched macro photography opportunities that have made Lembeh a bucket-list destination for underwater photographers worldwide.
