Desmond was born in 1936 and has been involved with conservation of animals since the age of eighteen. He studied the hawks and eagles of South Africa extensively and produced the first book depicting the fifty six different species photographically. This took twenty years of free time to complete and during that period, gave many lectures calling for the cessation of needless killing of these avian predators. He turned his attention to the plight of sharks in 2008 and wrote the book “Of Sharks and Men” and this work is devoted to the conservation of these maligned ocean predators.
