Overview of Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands and one of Europe’s most popular year-round holiday destinations. Located in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 300 kilometres west of the coast of Morocco, the island is renowned for its warm climate, dramatic volcanic landscapes and excellent tourism infrastructure. Tenerife is home to Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak at 3,715 metres, which dominates the island’s interior and forms part of the UNESCO-listed Teide National Park.
The island offers a striking contrast of environments, from black volcanic beaches and rugged coastal cliffs to lush forests in the north and arid landscapes in the south. Tenerife is served by two international airports, Tenerife South and Tenerife North, making it easily accessible from across Europe. Combined with its mild climate throughout the year, this accessibility has helped establish the island as one of the continent’s leading diving destinations.

About The Diving
Tenerife offers some of the most diverse diving in the Canary Islands. Formed by volcanic activity, the island’s underwater landscapes are characterised by lava flows, rocky reefs, arches, caverns, swim-throughs and dramatic drop-offs. The waters surrounding the island support a wide variety of marine life, including rays, moray eels, octopus, barracuda, trumpetfish, groupers and large schools of bream and damselfish.
Visibility typically ranges between 15 and 30 metres, often exceeding this during favourable conditions. Water temperatures generally vary from around 18°C in winter to 25°C in late summer. The majority of diving takes place from shore, although boat diving is available in several areas and provides access to deeper reefs, wrecks and offshore sites. Suitable dive sites can be found for all experience levels, from sheltered bays ideal for training and beginner divers to deep wrecks and challenging volcanic formations for more experienced divers.
Dive Highlights
Las Galletas and Los Cristianos
Located on Tenerife’s south coast, Las Galletas and neighbouring Los Cristianos are among the island’s most popular diving areas. The sheltered coastline offers a variety of shore and boat dives featuring volcanic reefs, rocky outcrops and abundant marine life. Divers regularly encounter rays, octopus, cuttlefish, moray eels and schools of barracuda. The area is also known for its calm conditions, making it suitable for divers of all experience levels.
One of the area’s best-known sites is El Condesito, the remains of a concrete freighter lying within a protected marine reserve near Punta Rasca. The wreck and surrounding volcanic reef attract a wide range of marine species and provide an excellent introduction to wreck diving.
Costa Adeje
Costa Adeje is one of Tenerife’s most established resort areas and offers a wide selection of dive sites along the island’s southwest coast. The underwater landscape consists of volcanic reefs, rocky pinnacles and lava formations that provide habitat for a diverse range of marine life. The area is particularly popular with photographers thanks to its excellent visibility and frequent encounters with rays, moray eels and large schools of fish.
Many dive centres operating from Costa Adeje offer access to both local shore dives and boat dives further offshore, allowing divers to explore a variety of environments during their stay.
Radazul
Situated on Tenerife’s east coast, Radazul is widely regarded as one of the island’s most reliable dive locations. The sheltered bay enjoys calm conditions throughout much of the year and often remains diveable even when weather conditions elsewhere around the island are less favourable. The site features easy shore access, shallow training areas and deeper sections suitable for advanced divers.
The volcanic reef systems around Radazul support a rich variety of marine life and make the area a favourite among local dive centres. Its combination of accessibility, reliable conditions and varied depths has helped make it one of Tenerife’s most frequently dived locations.
Tabaiba Wreck
One of Tenerife’s most famous dive sites is the Tabaiba Wreck, located on the island’s northeast coast. The wreck, known as El Peñón, is a tugboat that was deliberately sunk in 2006 to create an artificial reef and diving attraction. Today it lies at approximately 30 metres depth and has become home to a wide variety of marine life, including octopus, moray eels, barracuda and large schools of fish.
The wreck is accessible from shore and offers one of the Canary Islands’ most popular wreck dives. Due to its depth, the site is generally recommended for advanced divers, although the surrounding reef areas can also provide rewarding diving opportunities.
Los Gigantes
On Tenerife’s west coast, the towering cliffs of Los Gigantes continue beneath the surface, creating dramatic underwater scenery. Divers can explore volcanic walls, rocky formations and deeper reef systems that attract a wide variety of marine life. Visibility is often excellent, and the area’s more exposed location can provide exciting conditions for experienced divers.
The combination of impressive underwater topography and the spectacular cliffs above the surface makes Los Gigantes one of the island’s most memorable diving destinations.
When To Go
Tenerife offers year-round diving thanks to its consistently mild climate and relatively stable sea temperatures. While conditions can vary between different parts of the island, diving is possible throughout the year. Summer and autumn generally bring the warmest water temperatures and excellent visibility, while winter often offers quieter dive sites and equally rewarding marine life encounters.
