BVI Wreck Week (Part 1)

As the 2024 BVI Wreck Week is launched, with new dates, activities and, of course, great diving – it is time for us to reflect on the 2023 event that was held in February this year.
BVI Wreck Week celebrates the incredible wrecks that these islands have to offer. With the iconic RMS Rhone to the much more recent art-ificial reefs installed to attract new wildlife and tourists alike. But, Wreck Week is also so much more that diving these great wreck sites. The organisers have ensured that local culture and history are explored, islanders and tourists alike get involved with local conservation projects and that there is plenty of fun to be had once the diving day is done.
The start to our week could not have been better, with our lovely host, Kim, meeting us at the ferry terminal and leading us to what was going to be our home for the next 7 nights – a stunning catamaran, supplied by The Moorings, that would allow us the freedom to visit some of the many lush islands that make up the British Virgin Islands. As the dives and events that make up wreck week take place on a few different islands, this gave us the opportunity to take part in them all. We had our very own skipper too, Jerry, who ensured we were in the right place at the right time on any given day. It was the stuff dive trip dreams are made of.
Our itinerary included diving with 5 different dive centres, visiting a multitude of wrecks and reefs. We were delighted to encounter schools of reef fish, sharks and rays (often so rare to see in the Caribbean were present on every dive), turtles, seahorses, bright sponges and corals, in clear, blue, warm waters.
We attended two beach cleans ups, with local schools taking part alongside divers and residents. Our evenings were packed with fun events, great food, interesting talks, and, of course, trying out some of the local brews.
Check out our next two blogs to find out all about the diving and watch out for our full feature in the next edition of Dive Travel Adventures Magazine in July!
