Book Review: Sharks of the Shallows
Sharks of the Shallows is a hardback coffee table book that features information and images of the sharks found in the waters of The Bahamas and Florida. Whilst the book has been written by Jeffrey Carrier, the images within are credited to three photographers Andy Murch, Jillian Morris and Duncan Brake.
The first thing you notice is the quality of the print production, with thick pages, well-spaced text and quality images throughout.
The book starts with a general introduction to sharks and their relatives. This chapter covers the biology of sharks and how they have evolved their incredible senses and the threats that they face in the world today. The pages contain a great deal of information about shark conservation too. The book is suitable for anyone interested in sharks, from kids just starting their education to shark-obsessed adults like myself!
The second part of the book covers some of the specific shark species in more detail. Some of the species in the book are rare or occasional visitors to these waters, and others can be easily found. For each, there is an information box giving the common and Latin names, along with a description and information about distribution, reproduction, feeding, behaviour and conservation. Each chapter has a wealth of images to go with the information, showing the sharks in their natural habitat.
These chapters cover a large number of shark species, just showing how important the waters in this area are to shark conservation. Twenty-Two species are covered individually in the second section of the book, from the huge species such as Whalesharks and Basking Sharks to the common, and smaller, nurse sharks that can be found on nearly every dive in this region. The third section of the book covers skates and rays, again with stunning images to accompany the information about each of the species included.
Sharks of the Shallows is the first book dedicated to the sharks of this region. It is full of interesting facts about sharks in general, and more specific details, such as the reason for the bizarre shape of the hammerhead sharks. There is so much information in this book, accompanied by well thought-out and stunning images, that this is a publication that any shark lover will want on their shelves.

After a two-year tour of UK art galleries, community spaces and aquariums, the Shark Trust’s acclaimed Oceanic31 exhibition takes its final bow at the Royal Geographical Society later this month. And the unique collection of artwork, depicting 31 species of oceanic sharks and rays, donated by 31 artists, is now open for bids from art lovers and shark enthusiasts. The online auction, launched today, will close on the 7th December at 8pm (BST). The money raised will support the Shark Trust Oceanics Programme.

Until 28 November, prizes worth a massive £10,000 – including experiences, products and tuition – feature in a line-up of items that can be won for £5 in an online prize draw to celebrate Bite-Back Shark & Marine Conservation’s 20th anniversary and help generate crucial funds for the future.
Top of the list of prizes is the chance to spend time with adventurer and wildlife expert Steve Backshall, a workout session with Nat Geo star Aldo Kane, a kayaking trip alongside white-water expert and diver Sal Montgomery and a Zoom call with ‘shark whisperer’ Cristina Zenato.
