Becoming Cousteau coming soon

Published

on

BECOMING COUSTEAU examines the epic life of Jacques Yves Cousteau, the ocean explorer who spanned the globe with a misfit crew of divers and filmmakers, under the lifelong creed, “Il faut aller voir” — “We must go and see for ourselves”.

The Frenchman who first sounded the alarm to save the oceans was born with a dream to fly, but a car accident grounded his aviation career, and he found rehabilitation and inspiration through free-diving in the South of France. His desire to go deeper and further led him to inventions that would forever change the way we see and know the undersea world, co-inventing the “aqualung” and revolutionizing underwater cinematography.

At the start, a burgeoning oil industry backed his explorations paving the way for ocean exploitation. Then, the television industry made him an international star. His trailblazing underwater cinematography and high sea adventures aboard the Calypso introduced generations around the world to the wonders of the seas, but when Cousteau started to see with his own eyes the destruction and degradation of the oceans, he sounded the alarm. But was it too late?

In BECOMING COUSTEAU, from National Geographic Documentary Films, two-time Academy Award-nominated film maker Liz Garbus poured through 550 hours of archival material and rarely-seen footage to let Cousteau’s films, words and recollections tell his own story. BECOMING COUSTEAU shines a spotlight on the man many of us grew up worshipping yet knew very little about while introducing him to a new generation.

Variety said that the film is “one of those movies that puts a life together so beautifully that you feel it heightening your awareness of everyday things.”

Reef-World raises public awareness of the urgency to protect coral reefs with £335,000 Ocean Outdoor Environmental Fund Boost

The Reef-World Foundation, a leading non-profit dedicated to coral reef conservation, today announced the exciting launch of its new campaign, “Drops in the Ocean,” which went live on Monday, 17 June across the UK. This impactful campaign receives a significant boost thanks to Ocean Outdoor’s annual Drops in the Ocean environmental fund.

The campaign will raise awareness of the critical role coral reefs play in maintaining healthy ocean and inspire individuals to take action to protect them.

“Every second breath we take comes from the ocean and coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea. They provide a critical habitat for countless marine species, directly impacting the health of our ocean and planet and providing us with vital resources for survival, including the air we breathe,” said Executive Director of The Reef-World Foundation, Chloe Harvey.

The ‘Drops in the Ocean’ campaign will leverage the power of Ocean Outdoor’s digital screens across the UK, amplifying the message and reaching a wider audience. Powerful visuals will showcase the beauty and fragility of coral reefs as well as demonstrating the strong connection each person has to these vital ecosystems. Since coral reefs contribute to the health of the ocean which provide 50% of the oxygen for our planet, protecting them is essential for all of us.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support from Ocean Outdoor’s Drops in the Ocean fund,” said Joyce Yang, Communications Manager at The Reef-World Foundation. “This partnership allows us to reach a wider audience across the UK. Together, we can inspire individuals to become champions for our ocean.”

Campaign highlights include:

  • Captivating visuals are displayed on prominent digital screens across the UK, thanks to Ocean Outdoor’s partnership.
  • Information on sustainable practices to protect coral reefs on Reef-World’s website.
  • Opportunities to donate and support Reef-World’s global marine conservation efforts.

About Green Fins

Green Fins is a proven conservation management approach – spearheaded by The Reef-World Foundation in partnership with the UN Environment Programme – which leads to a measurable reduction in the negative environmental impacts associated with the marine tourism industry. The initiative aims to protect and conserve coral reefs through environmentally friendly guidelines that promote a sustainable diving and snorkelling tourism industry. It provides the only internationally recognised environmental standards for the diving and snorkelling industry and has a robust assessment system to measure compliance.

Green Fins encourages and empowers members of the diving industry to act to reduce the pressures on coral reefs by offering dive and snorkel companies practical, low-cost alternatives to harmful practices – such as anchoring, fish feeding and chemical pollution – as well as providing strategic training, support and resources. By reducing the local direct and indirect pressures tourism puts on coral reefs, it helps make corals healthier and more resilient to other stresses such as the effects of climate change. Look for the Green Fins logo when booking your next dive trip.
